CHAPTER EIGHT

The heat is on…

“Quiet,” Micah whispered and gently tried to nudge the purring cat away with his face. “Knock it off, brat.” The frisky feline was set in his ways and Micah knew he never needed to set an alarm, the patchy colored cat would always be right up in his face every morning at the same time, purring in his not so subtle way and demanding to be fed.

One arm was trapped under Madison’s head, but the other was free so he grabbed up his phone on the bedside table to make sure it was still fully charged and there were no messages from Kyle or one of the others. Knowing a trip to Mexico was imminent, he intended to stay alert.

Thunderpunch had jumped up onto his bed at his usual time, just after eight in the morning. The loud rumble from the cat’s throat sounded like Jet firing up his Harley and Micah slipped his arm out from under Madison so he could get the cat off the bed before he woke his date.

Thunderpunch jumped down with a soft thud and a meow. He was the brother of Jet’s portly feline companion, Polly, but the two siblings were day and night. Polly was overweight and relaxed, whereas Thunderpunch was wiry and high-strung. The first time Micah had laid eyes on him, he’d known the cat was full of personality, just like him.

“Get goin’,” he ordered with a wave of his hand as the cat waited at the bedroom doorway. “I tell you,” the kitty just stared up at his master as he approached, curling his tail at his side with impatience, “you have got to be the ugliest and most useless cat there is.” This was the pairs usual banter. Micah would tease his companion and spar with him, Thunderpunch had been aptly named at a young age, rarely would he miss an opportunity to trade a few hooks or uppercuts with anyone willing to do so.

“I’m gonna get you,” Micah called out as he chased the quick cat down the hall towards the kitchen, pulling his robe closed as he went. He scooped Thunderpunch up when he’d paused to rub his face against an archway frame. “That’s it. I’m sick of feeding you all the time.” The little cat offered a head-bump to his master and a loud purr. “I’m putting an ad in the paper as soon as I get the chance. ‘Cat that eats too much and has a bad attitude. Free to whoever the hell can deal with his crap.’” Thunderpunch stretched his neck out for a quick rub under the chin. “Not that anyone would want you, you jerk.” Micah placed him down on the ground and the cat sprinted ahead into the kitchen and called out from his food dish. “Are you kidding me?” His bowl was still plenty full. “The king needs new food every morning, doesn’t he?” His little buddy circled in and out his legs while Micah poured out some food.
